The 1st Korea AI International Film Festival, accepting entries until September 6

The ‘Korea AI International Film Festival’ will be held at KINTEX on October 25, 2024. Submissions will be accepted via the festival’s website until midnight on September 6, 2024 (KST).

Hosted by Gyeonggi-do and organized by the Gyeonggi Content Agency, the Korea AI International Film Festival was planned to support the creation of various video content using AI under the theme “New Opportunities Presented by AI.”

The contest is divided into four categories: ▲Narrative Content, ▲Documentary Content, ▲Arts & Culture Content, and ▲Free Format Content. The Narrative Content category is for films or videos that tell a story, while the Documentary Content category is for works based on real events or facts. The Arts & Culture Content category includes artistic videos such as those centered around art, music, or dance, and the Free Format Content category is open to videos of any genre. Applicants can submit only one entry per category, and all submissions must be created using generative AI technology. The recommended format is Full HD, with a minimum length of 90 seconds and a maximum of 10 minutes.

In each of the four categories, one first-place, one second-place, and four third-place winners will be chosen. A total of 26 works will be awarded, including one Grand Prize and one Global South Special Prize across all categories. The total prize money amounts to KRW 81 million (approximately $61,300), with KRW 20 million (approximately $15,100) awarded to the Grand Prize winner.

Entries will be accepted until midnight on September 6, 2024 (KST). Those  who wish to participate can find further details on the official festival website and submit their documents via email. Anyone with a video created using generative AI is eligible to enter, regardless of nationality, gender, or age. For inquiries, please contact the operating office email (2024aiff.cs@gmail.com).

A festival official stated, “In our evaluation, we will focus on the novelty of the storytelling rather than solely on the use of generative AI,” adding, “We will give priority to works that are screened for the first time at our film festival.”

Meanwhile, during the film festival on October 25, in addition to the award ceremony and screenings of the winning works, a specialist conference will be held on the topic of opportunities brought by generative AI in content creation. The festival preparation committee, which consists of Korean AI experts, is organizing the event. Committee members include Professor Kim Dae-Shik of KAIST’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Director Kim Tae-Yong, who directed <Wonderland(2024)> and <Late Autumn(2011)>, Director Han Sang-Ho, who directed the AI-produced documentary <Great India>, aired on EBS (Korea’s public educational broadcasting channel), and choreographer Kim Hea-Yeon, known for blending AI and art.
