Tacky and Lousy Secures Funding from Painters & Ventures to Grow K-Makgeolli Globally

Tacky and Lousy, a Korean startup that operates a small-scale makgeolli (Korean rice wine) brewery and the antenna shop “7.8,” has secured investment from Painters & Ventures. The amount of the investment has not been disclosed.

Painters & Ventures recognized the company’s efficient small-scale brewing technology, which optimizes both cost and space, as well as the strong growth potential of its current makgeolli offerings. The firm was also impressed by the unique customer experience delivered through “7.8,” which has gained popularity among people in their 20s and 30s and international tourists. This shop serves as a testing ground where customer feedback is actively incorporated into product development.

Explaining their investment, Painters & Ventures said, “Tacky and Lousy has developed products and small-batch brewing modules tailored for the needs of global B2B restaurant clients by improving the cost-effectiveness and scalability of makgeolli production. We were particularly drawn to the company’s efforts to cultivate a culture around enjoying makgeolli through continuous engagement with customers.”

Tacky and Lousy is currently expanding its business through a dual B2B and B2C model — supplying makgeolli to various Korean-style bars and restaurants, including the Michelin Guide-listed “Myeonseoul,” while also operating “7.8” to engage directly with consumers. Notably, over 90% of “7.8” customers are women in their 20s and 30s or international visitors, reflecting a surge in demand driven by the global popularity of K-Food.

Looking ahead, the company aims to establish small-scale breweries and antenna shops overseas, allowing it to locally produce and serve fresh makgeolli in international markets. This year, it is targeting locations in countries such as Germany.

Ju-won Lee, CEO of Tacky and Lousy, commented, “With the support of Painters & Ventures, we plan to further refine our small-scale brewing technology and strengthen our localization strategy through feedback collected at ‘7.8.’ We’re committed to raising the global profile of K-makgeolli.”
