Upstage has announced a strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) that combines co-sales initiatives, go-to-market partnerships, and technology development to expand access to high-performance, cost-effective generative AI solutions throughout the Asia-Pacific region and the United States. The partnership is further strengthened by Amazon’s minority investment in Upstage, highlighting the company’s technical leadership and growing regional influence.

The collaboration establishes AWS as Upstage’s preferred cloud provider for building, training, and deploying future foundation models. Upstage will leverage AWS’s advanced machine learning infrastructure, including Amazon SageMaker, AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips, to scale its Solar large language model and comprehensive suite of AI-powered document processing solutions.
“Upstage and AWS have built a strong foundation through years of collaboration, and this agreement represents a new chapter in our shared vision to accelerate AI innovation globally,” said Sung Kim, CEO and co-founder of Upstage. “With AWS as our strategic partner, we’re poised to scale our impact and bring secure, intelligent, and high-performing AI solutions to more organizations in the public sector.”
The partnership specifically targets governments, public agencies, and regulated industries, delivering enterprise-grade generative AI solutions optimized for public sector requirements including performance, security, and compliance standards. Both companies will collaborate on comprehensive go-to-market strategies and joint selling efforts across the Asia-Pacific and United States markets.
Jon Jones, VP and Global Head of Startups and Venture Capital at AWS, emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership: “AWS is excited to enable Upstage to unleash a new wave of innovation. From our fully-managed AI services to purpose-built chips for training and inferencing of foundation models, Upstage is leveraging AWS to uplevel how public sector stakeholders apply AI to improve efficiency and productivity, while keeping everybody’s data safe and secure.”
The strategic agreement builds upon an established foundation of successful collaboration. Upstage has extensively utilized Amazon SageMaker to train its Solar models, achieving significant reductions in training time through advanced data pre-processing and continued pre-training methodologies. The company has also successfully implemented its proprietary Depth-Up Scaling (DUS) method using AWS infrastructure, enabling more efficient scaling and enhanced model performance.
Upstage’s flagship Solar model family, featuring the 10.7B-parameter Solar Mini and 22B-parameter Solar Pro, is currently available through Amazon Bedrock Marketplace, Amazon SageMaker JumpStart, and AWS Marketplace. These models are already deployed by hundreds of organizations across finance, healthcare, legal, education, and government sectors throughout Korea, other Asia-Pacific countries, the United States, and beyond, facilitating AI-powered digital transformation initiatives.
Abhijeet Muzumdar, Vice President of Corporate Development at Amazon, praised Upstage’s innovation trajectory: “Upstage has established itself as a key AI innovator in the Asia-Pacific region. With this investment, we are excited to support Upstage’s next phase of growth as they scale their Solar foundation models and document processing solutions. Sung Kim and his team are delivering impressive AI technology that’s already helping several organizations across multiple sectors, and we’re committed to fostering continued innovation in generative AI by supporting visionary companies like Upstage.”
Upstage recently unveiled Solar Pro 2, its advanced 31B-parameter flagship language model engineered for complex reasoning and autonomous task execution. The model incorporates a hybrid architecture featuring dual operational modes: Chat Mode for rapid response generation and Reasoning Mode for structured multi-step logical analysis, significantly enhancing performance in mathematics, coding, and logic-intensive applications. Solar Pro 2 demonstrates exceptional Korean language comprehension with cultural awareness specifically calibrated for specialized domains including finance, law, and healthcare, while functioning as an autonomous agentic system capable of executing complex multi-step workflows through seamless external tool integration.
Beyond language modeling capabilities, Upstage offers its enterprise-grade Document Intelligence solution through AWS Marketplace’s AI Agents & Tools category. This sophisticated agentic AI tool instantly extracts critical information from documents with diverse layouts including contracts, invoices, forms, and financial statements, transforming unstructured text data into structured formats such as HTML and Markdown for seamless integration into downstream AI applications.
The partnership extends to educational and nonprofit sectors through the AI Initiative, co-launched by Upstage and AWS in April to accelerate generative AI adoption across educational institutions and nonprofit organizations. The comprehensive program provides free API access to Upstage’s complete AI model suite while AWS contributes complimentary infrastructure support and educational tools including AWS Skill Builder and PartyRock, an experimental generative AI sandbox powered by Amazon Bedrock. The initiative has already attracted over 200 participating organizations, including prestigious institutions such as Seoul National University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
