Flashbackground Secures USD 9.6 Million Project Financing for Immersive Media Art Venue ‘Gyerim’ in Gyeongju

Dexter Studios (hereinafter “Dexter”) announced that its subsidiary Flashbackground has raised approximately USD 9.6 million in project financing for its media art initiative, Flashback: Gyerim (hereinafter “Gyerim”), with participation from Industrial Bank of Korea, Gaia Venture Partners, NextG Investment, Prologue Ventures, and Union Investment Partners.

Gyerim represents Dexter’s first permanent exhibition hall, developed through Flashbackground’s immersive media art business. Serving as the launch point of the immersive media art brand Flashbackground, the project reinterprets regional folklore into experiential media art. It is being constructed within Gyeongju’s iconic Bomun Tourist Complex as Korea’s largest media art space, spanning 1,700 pyeong (approximately 5,600 m²).

By leveraging the collective capabilities of the Dexter Group—including ▲VFX, ▲immersive content, ▲IP, ▲sound design, and ▲spatial architecture—Gyerim integrates architecture, design, and construction optimized for content, flow, and acoustics. Sound is provided by Liveton, the studio behind the audio for Hollywood’s Mickey 17, while the exhibition features Korea’s tallest media art space at 11 meters, offering an unparalleled sense of immersion.

The exhibition highlights Gyeongju’s unique cultural heritage through storytelling-based media art enhanced by advanced interaction technologies. Among the 13 original contents are ‘Geoseogan’, a majestic depiction of the birth of Silla’s first leader, Park Hyeokgeose; ‘The Sea Guarded by the Dragon’, an experiential interpretation of King Munmu transforming into a sea dragon to protect Silla; and ‘Sindansu’, a massive interactive installation inspired by traditional communal gathering spaces.

Having attracted multiple institutional investors, Gyerim has secured recognition for its business competitiveness and growth potential. Completion is scheduled in time for the October opening, coinciding with the global spotlight on Gyeongju during the 2025 APEC Summit.

Eunji Choi, CEO of Flashbackground, stated, “Gyerim introduces a new paradigm of immersive media art by combining historically grounded storytelling with dazzling visualization and experiential design. It will serve as a distinctive exhibition that expands Korea’s cultural heritage into a refined, contemporary experience amidst rapidly growing global interest.”
