MOFAC Studios Raised $4.2 Mil. Investment to Expand AI-Driven Production and Global Distribution of Feature Animation

Korean content production startup MOFAC Studios has secured an investment of approximately USD 4.2 million(KRW 6 billion) from Altos Ventures.

Founded and led by director Sung-ho Jang, a first-generation Korean VFX (visual effects) pioneer, MOFAC has contributed CG work to numerous acclaimed projects, including Haeundae, The Admiral: Roaring Currents, and Sweet Home. In April 2025, after over a decade of development, the studio released its full-length animated feature King of Kings.

King of Kings is an animated adaptation inspired by the works of British novelist Charles Dickens, depicting the life of Jesus Christ. The film premiered in North America in April 2025, grossing USD 7.01 million(KRW 10 billion) in its opening week and ranking second at the box office. Within days, cumulative revenue surpassed USD 19.1 million(KRW 27.2 billion) — breaking a 27-year record in the biblical animation genre previously held by The Prince of Egypt. The film also earned a CinemaScore rating of “A+”, reflecting both critical and audience acclaim. In Korea, it became the second-highest-grossing Korean animated film within five weeks of release.

The film was also screened at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., where it received a standing ovation and additional showings — a rare achievement for a mid-sized Korean studio entering the U.S. mainstream cultural scene. Instead of pursuing expensive new IPs, MOFAC strategically reinterpreted public domain IPs with universal storytelling appeal, proving its ability to create globally resonant content.

MOFAC has integrated Unreal Engine, originally developed for the Korean gaming industry, into its film production pipeline, enabling real-time simulation and review capabilities. This innovation has significantly reduced production time and cost while enhancing quality — a breakthrough even major Hollywood studios have yet to fully adopt. The studio also employs AI-based virtual set production and editing, cutting production timelines by up to 30%, expanding AI utilization across the entire content creation process.

Aligned with the Korean government’s national AI innovation strategy, MOFAC is focusing on advancing AI-driven content production and physical AI technologies, leveraging Korea’s robust AI infrastructure to build a new foundation for growth.

An Altos Ventures representative commented,, “Korea possesses world-class content planning and production capabilities. MOFAC stands out for its technological innovation, strategic use of global IP, and proven box office success in North America. We believe this investment will accelerate MOFAC’s global expansion.”

MOFAC CEO Sung-ho Jang stated, “This investment will enable us to expand the planning and production of our next feature-length animations. We also plan to strengthen R&D in AI and virtual production technologies, while accelerating the expansion of our global distribution network, with a particular focus on North America.”
