Sasung Power Secures 500 Million KRW Pre-Series A Funding for Structural Battery Development
SASUNG POWER, a Korean venture company specializing in the development and manufacturing of structural batteries, announced today that it has successfully secured 500 million KRW (approximately 375,000 USD) in pre-Series A funding from Korea Investment Accelerator.
Structural batteries are multifunctional batteries that can replace structural components. They combine the functions of a structural material, supporting loads, with the ability to store energy. SASUNG POWER has developed a battery with a tensile strength of 320 MPa and an energy density of 182 Wh/kg, which has been certified by a recognized testing institution. By adopting this battery, it is possible to increase the total energy capacity while maintaining the overall system weight, making it suitable for various applications in the mobility and aerospace sectors.
Mi-Young Park, CEO of SASUNG POWER, is Korea’s first Ph.D. in the field of structural batteries, with a background in aerospace engineering at KAIST. She previously oversaw the production technology and mass production delivery of composite structures for medium-sized passenger aircraft. SASUNG POWER’s structural battery employs composite packaging, offering high corrosion resistance and reduced fire spread. This addresses the safety concerns associated with commercial lithium batteries. The company is currently discussing the sale of products with global partners that focus on these characteristics.
Woo-Hyun Nam, an investment manager at Korea Investment Accelerator, who led this investment, said, “As the trend towards electrification and wireless technology continues, the need for technologies that can increase total energy capacity without additional weight is expected to grow. SASUNG POWER is a leading company in developing structural battery technology, one of the ways to achieve this, and is also generating excellent sales through the commercialization of its products. We expect significant growth in the future.”
Mi-Young Park, CEO of SASUNG POWER, stated, “With the full commercialization of our panel-type structural battery products completed in 2025, we will expand our structural battery product business in addition to the structural battery component business that we have been conducting, and pursue business growth in the global market.”
