[KSGC Interview] Amatelus’ SwipeVideo: “Revolutionizing Personalized Video Viewing Experiences”

When we watch videos online, the content is entirely controlled by the creators. They decide what scenes to show, leaving viewers to passively consume whatever is presented. While creators work hard to produce better videos, times are changing.

For instance, live-streamed concerts often feature multiple cameras capturing various angles and positions. Imagine being able to choose which angle you want to watch in real-time. This concept is now a reality thanks to Amatelus, a Japanese company that operates the SwipeVideo service.

To illustrate, consider a K-POP group performance. Some viewers might want to focus on a specific member, while others prefer another. At a fashion show, one viewer may prefer frontal shots of the models, another side views, and someone else might want to see both simultaneously. Sports broadcasts, like baseball, where calls such as safe or out spark debate, could benefit even more from this level of flexibility. Amatelus’ SwipeVideo technology makes all of this possible.

As video, streaming, and broadcasting services evolve, production companies, broadcasters, and media platforms are likely to adopt solutions like SwipeVideo. Anticipating this trend is precisely why Amatelus developed this innovative technology.

Amatelus’ CEO, Shinya Shimojo, is a successful serial entrepreneur who has already led a company to a public listing on the Japanese stock exchange. Building on this success, he created SwipeVideo. Shinya shared that the company spent three years working privately to develop a product that “surpasses all competitors currently on the market,” reflecting his unwavering commitment to excellence.

Amatelus has entered the Korean market through the K-Startup Grand Challenge 2024, a program supporting international startups seeking to establish themselves in South Korea. The Korean government has been actively fostering global expansion for domestic startups and welcoming international startups. Initiatives include the launch of the Global Startup Center (GSC) and a special Startup Korea visa to attract global talent.

SwipeVideo’s mission could be summed up as, “Empowering viewers with rights and participation in video viewing.” In ancient Japanese mythology, Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun and light, is a central figure believed to be the origin of Japan’s imperial lineage. The name “Amatelus” resembles Amaterasu in pronunciation, and one might wonder if the company’s vision includes “returning the light to the viewers.”

What is the problem our team is trying to solve?

SwipeVideo solves the viewer engagement problem prevalent in the media industry. Currently, due to social media content and short-form videos like Shorts and Reels, entertainment and content providers are losing their existing audience. We have a way to make traditional media formats much more engaging and create new revenue models. To achieve this, we utilize free-perspective and multi-angle videos, and thanks to our innovative technology, we have been able to reconstruct video formats that were previously impossible.

How do we solve this problem?

In many live events, there are videos shot from multiple cameras. Until now, producers have controlled the final video viewers see, but SwipeVideo allows users to choose which camera footage to watch. Users can freely switch between more than 30 camera angles without latency and without resolution loss.

When users can select the video they want to watch, their engagement with the content increases significantly, and they become willing to pay more. According to our data, even with many angles available, users actively switch camera angles during streaming events. This effectively solves the engagement problem and provides a way to generate new revenue from existing customers.

What are our advantages and technical competitiveness compared to competitors?

We have many differentiating characteristics compared to our competitors. Competing companies can only stream 4-6 angles due to resolution loss or delay when switching camera angles. In contrast, SwipeVideo can stream unlimited angles without resolution degradation. Additionally, while competitors can stream free-perspective video for only a short time, we can provide more than that.

What products/services do we offer?

Our streaming technology is an HTML5 player that can stream video using cloud technology. Any company streaming content to users can easily embed our video player on their website or app. SwipeVideo also operates its own streaming platform, SV-Commerce. We provide live streaming of concerts and sports events through this platform.

Who are our target market and core customers?

The main targets are media rights holders who stream content to end-users and prioritize engagement. This includes major sports leagues, music IP owners and artist management groups, and TV broadcasters.

Fashion websites, cosmetics companies, and educational providers can also use our eye-catching free-perspective video technology to communicate much better with their audience. This technology can be directly seen on the first page of our website.

Why are you entering the Korean market? What do you want to do in the Korean market?

Korea has a major media and entertainment industry and a highly developed fashion industry. Koreans are tech-savvy and well understand the value of integrating new technologies into marketing and engagement strategies.

What is our business model?

SwipeVideo provides streaming technology for broadcasting purposes free of charge. We operate on a revenue-sharing model, so there are no initial cost burdens. For fashion, cosmetics, and education sectors, we apply a monthly SaaS payment model based on usage.

What have been our team’s achievements? In particular, what are the achievements in entering the Korean market?

We have signed MOUs with various entertainment companies and are currently discussing a joint venture with one of Korea’s largest entertainment providers.

What is our team’s competitiveness?

SwipeVideo’s CEO, Shinya Shimojo, is a serial entrepreneur who has founded and listed a software company with over 250 employees. Our technical team has been working privately for three years to develop technology that far surpasses other multi-angle streaming technologies in the market.

What is currently most needed for entering the Korean market?

We are seeking partnerships with large and small entertainment companies, sports broadcasting organizations, and all groups looking to more effectively promote fashion or cosmetics products and further strengthen engagement with target customers.
