[Korean Startup Interview] HYUNSUNG, “Revolutionizing Global Logistics with Smart Labels and AI-Powered Platforms”
Imagine this scenario: A company ships critical goods to a customer in another country, but the shipment is lost or stolen during transit, causing significant damage to the customer. The shipping company, however, only learns about the issue after it’s too late to resolve. Alternatively, consider a vaccine manufacturer shipping temperature-sensitive vaccines overseas, only for the vaccines to be exposed to room temperature during transit, rendering them unusable. Unaware of the mishap, the company attempts to send replacements but faces penalties from the receiving government due to missed deadlines. These types of challenges are common in international logistics and often lead to substantial financial and reputational damage.

The company we are introducing today, HYUNSUNG, is tackling these global challenges by advancing “Global Smart Logistics 4.0” to make it even smarter. Founded in 2018 by CEO Park Byung-kang, Hyunsung is a logistics startup built on Park’s 20 years of experience in the IT industry, which began with his career at a Japanese telecommunications company.
In international logistics, the situations described earlier occur frequently. How can they be prevented? One solution is to attach “smart labels” with communication capabilities to products. These labels can immediately alert manufacturers, shipping companies, and end clients if the product deviates from its designated route, enabling quick action. Additionally, attaching temperature sensors to vaccine labels could detect prolonged exposure to temperatures above 0°C. In such cases, the vaccine manufacturer could promptly dispatch replacements to ensure delivery within the required timeframe, avoiding penalties. HYUNSUNG is the company making this possible with its “smart labels” and “AI Smart Logistics Platform.”
However, a question arises: If “smart labels” were made with expensive sensors, communication chips, and long-lasting batteries, the problem could be solved, but the labels would become bulky, heavy, and prohibitively expensive. This is where HYUNSUNG’s competitive advantage comes into play. HYUNSUNG’s smart labels are remarkably thin, measuring just 1.3mm, yet they can integrate various sensors, including those for temperature, humidity, light exposure, shock, tilt, and GPS. The company also co-owns the technology to produce ultra-low-power printed batteries required to power these sensors.
These printed batteries, based on zinc-manganese primary cells, address a critical issue in air cargo: the risk of battery explosions. Additionally, HYUNSUNG has developed the world’s first global roaming integrated antenna, capable of operating in bandwidths ranging from 700 MHz to 1.9 GHz, effectively solving global roaming challenges. The company has also created a security module using MCU-based RF chips, enabling secure global roaming communication. Essentially, Hyunsung’s solution is akin to attaching a miniature smartphone equipped with a variety of sensors to a product—at an incredibly low cost.
Thanks to these technological innovations, leading global logistics companies have chosen HYUNSUNG as a consortium partner for “Global Smart Logistics 4.0.” Since April 2023, HYUNSUNG has conducted 31 global logistics roaming field tests across 12 countries, including the United States, Taiwan, Germany, Japan, Turkey, Vietnam, Sweden, and Singapore. Reflecting on this process, CEO Park Byung-kang noted, “If the level of a product validated in a laboratory is 100, certification raises it to 200. However, field tests are conducted in environments where all kinds of issues arise, requiring a level of 600 to pass successfully.” These rigorous tests proved that HYUNSUNG’s smart labels function reliably under various communication conditions, including 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi, across different countries and scenarios.
When asked about his vision for the future, Park said, “A company leading smart logistics will have the capability to build logistics hub centers in regions like Africa, the Middle East, and South America. We aim to lay the groundwork for creating these global logistics hubs.” He added, “We aspire to become a global venture that leads the sensing and monitoring market based on global roaming between companies and nations—a market that major corporations struggle to dominate due to competition.”
HYUNSUNG was honored with the grand prize at the prestigious “CJ GLO!VentUs ( Global+Venture+Us) 2nd Top 10 Demo Day” held last November. Reflecting on the achievement, CEO Park expressed his gratitude, saying, “Participating in the CJ GLO!VentUs program allowed me to connect with CJ’s global network and the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy & Innovation(Gyeonggi CCEI). We also received invaluable mentoring from experts tailored to global markets.”
The CJ GLO!VentUs program is a global open innovation initiative designed to support the growth of promising domestic startups with global expansion potential. It helps startups scale their businesses by facilitating partnerships with global companies. Now in its second year, the program was jointly planned and operated by CJ and the Gyeonggi CCEI.
HYUNSUNG, with its innovative and advanced technologies, is striving to lead “Smart Logistics 4.0” in the global logistics market. This year, the company secured a total cumulative investment of KRW 5.5 billion (approximately USD 4.2 million), including a Pre-Series A round. HYUNSUNG plans to launch its Series A funding round in the first half of next year. For investors curious about HYUNSUNG’s technology and vision, which have earned recognition from leading global logistics companies, consider reaching out to CEO Park Byung-kang for a coffee chat.

What problem is HYUNSUNG trying to solve?
The global volume of transported cargo has grown exponentially, giving rise to a market known as “Global Smart Logistics 4.0.” However, this market faces significant challenges. One major issue is the difficulty in monitoring the real-time location and status of cargo during the global logistics process. This can result in cargo loss, delays, or quality deterioration, particularly for temperature-sensitive goods.
Another issue is the lack of transparency and communication surrounding cargo information. Uncertainty about the route, status, and arrival time of shipments often leads to customer dissatisfaction and reduces operational efficiency.
Cargo loss and theft are also critical problems. These incidents can be challenging to recover from and can damage a company’s reputation.
Additionally, there are concerns about environmental sustainability. The logistics process often generates unnecessary carbon emissions and overuses resources, which negatively impacts the environment.
HYUNSUNG is dedicated to solving these challenges by providing innovative technological solutions.
How does HYUNSUNG solve this problem?
HYUNSUNG tackles these global logistics issues using two core technologies: Smart Labels and the AI Logistics Platform.
The smart label is an IoT-based solution equipped with sensors for temperature, humidity, impact detection, and GPS. It collects data and transmits it to a cloud server, enabling real-time monitoring through a dashboard. For instance, the smart label offers geo-fencing capabilities, which automatically detect and alert users if the cargo deviates from its designated route. In cases of suspected loss or theft, the label continuously updates its location to support efficient tracking.
Additionally, if an abnormal condition arises, such as a temperature exceeding the acceptable threshold, the label sends immediate alerts to users, allowing for real-time issue resolution. HYUNSUNG’s technology also secures the entire transportation record by storing it on a blockchain, ensuring data integrity and preventing tampering or forgery.
HYUNSUNG also supports data-driven decision-making through its AI Logistics Platform. This platform analyzes logistics data collected from the smart labels to optimize routes, predict delivery schedules, and automate resource allocation. By integrating data from logistics companies, transportation providers, and customers, the platform increases transparency and efficiency. A visualization dashboard provides corporate users with real-time insights into cargo status and logistics performance.
HYUNSUNG’s Smart Labels are designed with environmental sustainability in mind. They are made from recyclable materials and use low-power IoT technology to extend battery life. Additionally, they enable global connectivity by supporting communication networks such as 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi across different regions.
HYUNSUNG’s innovative approach enhances trust between customers and companies by providing real-time, transparent data. It improves the customer experience, prevents issues through proactive monitoring, supports recovery efforts when problems arise, and significantly reduces environmental impact through optimized processes and sustainable solutions. These technologies are transforming global logistics into a more efficient and sustainable system.
Compared to competitors, what are HYUNSUNG’s competitive and technical advantages?
Most importantly, a stable technological framework has been successfully established. This includes the integration of multiple low-power sensors, designed with global network compatibility as a key foundation.
