SEOUL AI HUB, the city’s AI startup incubator, will host a physical AI hackathon called TOYTHON on August 22 with Team Human, OpenAI, NUCODE and Korea Investment Accelerator, bringing 100 builders together to create working hardware prototypes powered by generative AI in just five hours.

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, will participate as the official sponsor and send its startup team to the event. The hackathon extends the “vibe coding” approach—rapidly building software services using generative AI—into the physical world by connecting AI-generated code to sensors, buttons, LEDs and displays on development boards.
Participants including startup founders, developers, planners and designers will combine NUCODE development boards with AI coding tools to build functioning prototypes from concept to hardware integration during the single-day event at Seoul AI Hub’s main center in Yangjae-dong. Registration is free, and 100 participants will be selected from applicants.
From Vibe Coding to Physical AI
The rapid spread of generative AI has enabled natural-language coding and service development primarily in web and mobile software. TOYTHON expands this capability to hardware prototyping by letting participants control physical devices with AI-generated code.
Builders will use NUCODE’s NU40 DK and NU87 Tiny DK development boards with connectors for buttons, sensors, LEDs and displays, writing control code with AI assistance. The connector-based boards and AI coding tools allow even participants unfamiliar with embedded development or soldering to turn ideas into working products.
Participants can freely combine environmental, motion and air-quality sensors with output devices and AI APIs to create toys and smart devices that bridge AI and the physical world. Seoul AI Hub said the hackathon will let participants experience AI expanding from on-screen software into physical objects and interactions.
OpenAI Startup Team On-Site, 100 Builders Convene
OpenAI’s startup team will join the event in person. As the sponsor, OpenAI will provide all 100 participants with three-month ChatGPT Pro subscriptions and $250 in API credits to support prototype development. Participants will interact directly with a global AI company’s startup team while applying cutting-edge AI technology to physical prototyping.
NUCODE development boards will be provided to all participants, with tutorial instruction and on-site mentoring. Boards will be loaned during the event, and winning teams may keep their equipment.
The hackathon will run in two tracks based on hardware experience and development skills: EASY MODE for participants with limited hardware experience to build working products using development boards and buttons, and MAKER MODE for combining sensors, output devices and APIs into higher-fidelity products. Judging criteria will differ by track.
After approximately five hours of building, participants will present their working prototypes for final evaluation and awards.
Seoul AI Hub Special Award for Physical AI Projects
Seoul AI Hub will again operate a dedicated Seoul AI Hub Special Award at the event, following its introduction at June’s Cursor Hackathon Seoul vol.3 with Team Human and Cursor. That event focused on AI services using Seoul public data to improve quality of life and solve urban problems, drawing 166 AI builders who completed 29 AI prototypes in one day. Ninety percent of participants were first-time hackathon attendees, representing over 15 Korean universities and research labs plus participants from the United States, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh and other countries.
Teams presented results spanning AI agent operating systems, developer productivity platforms, privacy protection, finance, retail and public services, demonstrating rapid generative-AI prototyping potential.
For TOYTHON, the special award will focus on projects demonstrating AI–hardware fusion potential, evaluating implementation results, technical application, creativity and future development prospects. Seoul AI Hub plans to use the award to identify promising projects with potential for follow-on product development, founding and commercialization.
Expanding Collaboration with Global AI Firms, Startups and Builder Communities
Seoul AI Hub has recently expanded partnerships with global AI companies, startups and developer and builder communities to strengthen open innovation programs that discover AI talent and early-stage projects.
Center Director Byun Wooseok said, “If generative AI greatly lowered the barrier to software development, the application domain is now expanding to rapidly building physical objects and products using AI. This hackathon will be an opportunity for builders from diverse fields to experiment directly with the potential of physical AI by combining AI and hardware. Seoul AI Hub will continue expanding collaboration with global AI companies, accelerators, startups and builder communities to create environments for rapid experimentation with new technologies, and support the talent and projects discovered through this process to move forward to founding and commercialization.”
