AI Agent Tool Marketplace Monid Raises $2.1M Pre-Seed as It Targets Subscription Software
Monid, a marketplace that lets AI agents discover, run and pay for external tools at runtime, has raised $2.1 million in pre-seed funding. The round included 1984 Ventures, Llama Ventures, Untapped Capital and Founders, Inc. The company also said its platform has processed more than 4 million agent transactions.

Monid describes itself as “OpenRouter for agent tools.” OpenRouter gives developers one account and interface for accessing multiple AI models. Monid applies a similar structure to the search, data and content-generation tools that agents use to perform work.
The distinction is important. Monid is not simply assembling a large API directory. It wants agents to search for a tool during a task, inspect its capabilities and price, and pay only for the resulting call. This shifts the setup work away from developers, who otherwise have to create accounts, manage API keys and maintain subscriptions for each provider.
One Connection for Discovery, Execution and Payment
Giving an AI agent external capabilities typically requires separate accounts for web search, scraping, lead data, company intelligence and media generation. Each service has its own authentication method, request schema and billing structure, even when a team only needs the service occasionally.
Monid organizes tool use into three steps: discover, inspect and run. An agent first searches for a tool that fits the task, checks its schema and price, then executes it. Endpoints can charge per call or per result, while the customer pays from a single Monid balance instead of maintaining separate billing relationships.
The platform can be connected through a remote Model Context Protocol server, an agent skill, a command-line interface or an HTTP API. According to Monid’s latest announcement, its catalog now reaches 1,800 APIs and tools spanning search, SEO, lead generation, ecommerce, market data, social data, image, video, audio and 3D generation, and private-company intelligence.
This approach treats an AI agent as an economic actor that can acquire a capability when it needs one. As agent workflows become more complex, preconfiguring every possible tool becomes increasingly impractical. Monid is betting that runtime discovery and purchasing will become a distinct infrastructure layer.
Replacing SaaS Subscriptions With Metered Calls
Monid is also challenging the fit between traditional software subscriptions and agent workloads. People may use a workplace application every day, but an agent might need SEO data once during a market study or invoke a video-generation API for a single campaign.
For intermittent demand, usage-based pricing can be more attractive than paying for a seat or monthly plan. Monid lets customers pay only when a tool runs, while giving API providers a distribution channel to agent users and a share of the resulting transaction revenue.
Usage-based access does not eliminate cost-control problems. An agent can repeatedly call the same endpoint or select an unnecessarily expensive provider. Budget caps, approval policies, detailed usage records and anomalous-spending detection will therefore be important as the platform expands.
Competing With Pipedream, Composio and API Marketplaces
Monid is entering a market with established integration platforms. Pipedream and Composio connect thousands of external services to AI agents while handling authentication and tool execution. Arcade focuses on authorization, runtime security and governance. Klavis AI uses progressive tool discovery to reduce context overload, while RapidAPI already operates a broad marketplace with consolidated API billing.

Pipedream says it offers more than 10,000 tools across over 3,000 APIs. Catalog size alone will therefore be difficult for Monid to defend. Its longer-term advantage must come from selecting the right provider for a task based on price, quality, latency and reliability.
Automatic failover, refunds for failed calls and credible provider-quality signals will also matter. The intermediary layer could face pressure if major API vendors distribute their own MCP servers and usage-based plans directly.
Four Million Transactions Need More Context
Monid’s reported 4 million agent transactions suggest early demand, but the company has not disclosed how many were paid tool executions rather than free discovery or inspection requests. Gross transaction value, net revenue, paid-user count and retention have also not been disclosed.
Public Monid pages currently show catalog figures ranging from 1,300 to 1,800 tools. The difference may reflect rapid expansion, but the newest 1,800 figure should be understood as a company-reported number.
Enterprise adoption introduces another set of requirements. Customers will want to know where tool inputs and responses are stored, how permissions are separated by user, which actions require approval, and how providers are vetted. Competitors with mature managed authentication and governance capabilities may have an advantage in these deployments.
The Layer After Tool Connectivity
As Model Context Protocol becomes a common interface between AI systems and external services, competition is moving beyond connectivity. The next questions are which tool an agent should choose, whether it can execute that tool safely, and how the transaction should be billed.
Monid is positioning itself at this distribution and payment layer. If agents increasingly acquire capabilities at runtime, the basic unit of software commerce could shift from human seats and monthly subscriptions toward machine-executed tasks and transactions.
That possibility matters more than the size of the pre-seed round. Monid now has to demonstrate that it can help agents choose better tools at lower cost—and execute them reliably—rather than simply offering a larger catalog.
